Practice Timeline


Monterey Peninsula Veterinary Surgical Service is formed and subsequently renamed to Pet Surgeons, Inc., which provides in-hospital surgery at local veterinary offices in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties.


Pet Surgeons, Inc. continues to operate locally and explores multiple fixed hospital locations in Monterey County.


October: Pet Specialists of Monterey opened its doors as a 24-hour veterinary emergency and specialty hospital in Del Rey Oaks, California, as an expansion of Pet Surgeons. The hospital was started by the owner, one board-certified surgeon, Dr. Greg Marsolais, and one internal medicine specialist (small animal), Dr. Jonathan Fradkin. The emergency service was managed by Dr. Bill Sullenberger, an emergency veterinarian.


June: Pet Specialists became an AAHA-accredited veterinary hospital.

July: Pet Specialists welcomed its first intern, Dr. Emily Montes, into the small animal internal medicine and surgery rotating internship through the AAVC Veterinary Internship & Residency Matching Program.


July-June: Pet Specialists began its first remodel and expansion, moving into the former UPS Store. Pet Specialist’s second intern, Dr. Stacy Rael, began her yearlong rotating internship.


January: The internal medicine department welcomed board-certified internal medicine specialist (small animal), Dr. Tara Ghormley. Additionally, Pet Specialist’s first surgical resident, Dr. Emily Montes, began her three-year residency at Pet Specialists.

July: Pet Specialists welcomed its third veterinary intern, Dr. Christine Parker-Graham.


July: The fourth class of interns began with two veterinarians, Dr. Heidi Denenholz and Dr. Jenna Hinton.

November: Certified Veterinary Practice Manager, Emma J. Sanchez, joined Pet Specialists as the Hospital Administrator.


June: The fifth class of interns began with three veterinarians, Dr. Christina Rettig, Dr. Mila Golovko, and Dr. Sierra Friedman.

September: Pet Specialists officially became the founding practice of Max’s Helping Paws Foundation.

October: Pet Specialists celebrated its fifth anniversary! The cardiology department was founded with the addition of board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Michael Lesser.

November: The hospital installed a 16-slice Toshiba Aquilion CT scanner and the outpatient CT imaging program was introduced to the surrounding veterinary community.


January: Board-certified surgeon Dr. Mike Dearmin joined the team, expanding the surgery department and mobile surgery services.

February: The second remodel began and Pet Specialists expanded into the adjacent space at 457 Canyon Del Rey Blvd. Avian and Exotic Clinic of Monterey moved into adjacent shared space, allowing for expansion inside the hospital.

May: The Pet Specialists of Monterey Veterinary Conference Center was introduced and made available to the local veterinary community.

June: Pet Specialists was awarded Monterey County’s Small Business of the Year and the City of Del Rey Oaks’ Outstanding Recognition.

July: The Monterey Chamber of Commerce awarded Pet Specialists of Monterey the 2017 Business Excellence Award for Professional Services. The sixth class of interns began, Dr. Katlyn Lake, Dr. Kelly Rockwell, and Dr. Katie Roehl. Additionally, Smartflow software went live! IPads, tablets, and interactive television screens were installed around the hospital, allowing for top-notch communication between doctors and staff regarding all patients.


July: The seventh class of interns began, Dr. John Evans and Dr. Jenna Strapple.

May: The fluoroscopy unit was installed in the surgical suite.

August: The oncology department was founded with the addition of board-certified oncologist, Dr. Sami Al-Nadaf.

October: The cardiology department and surgery department successfully performed the first pacemaker implant surgery at PSM.

November: Pet Specialists of Monterey became the first veterinary hospital in Monterey County to earn the California Green Business certification.

December: Pet Specialists installed and programed a new 3D printer to create life size models from images transferred from the CT machine.


March: Monterey County Weekly Best of Monterey County 2019, Best Veterinarians
